The best powered speakers for events are the ones matched to the room and the crowd. For most functions, parties and live music we run QSC K.2 Series speakers, and add a QSC KS118 sub when the night needs real low end. For speech where there's no power, a Bose S1 Pro+ battery speaker does the job.
Pick the speaker by the event, not the brochure. A pair of K12.2s suits a room of about 100 people. One K10.2 suits about 50.
What are the best powered speakers for events?
The best powered speakers for events are clear at volume, cover the whole room evenly, and survive being loaded in and out every weekend. These are the five we run at events and hire out of our studio in Footscray:
- QSC K12.2: the all rounder for parties, functions and live music
- QSC K10.2: smaller functions, speeches and background music
- QSC K8.2: compact speeches, and a stage monitor
- QSC KS118: the sub you add for real low end
- Bose S1 Pro+: speech where there's no power to plug into
Every one of them is the same gear we take to our own jobs. It lives in Pelican cases and gets tested before every hire. Renting audio gear can be a minefield of flogged out packages and consumer kit, so we don't do that.
Here's the thing most people miss. Speaker systems fail most often because they were never matched to the room or the crowd size, not because the speaker was bad. So the rest of this guide is about which one suits which event.
Which powered speaker suits which event?
Match the speaker to the crowd and the job. Big speakers and subs for dancing and live music, smaller speakers for speeches, and a battery speaker only where there's no power and nobody needs it loud.
QSC K12.2: best all rounder
The K12.2 is the speaker we use on our own live audio jobs, which is why it's in our packages and not whatever was on special. Every K.2 Series model runs a 2000 watt power module, and the K12.2 pairs it with a 12 inch woofer that reaches down to 50 Hz. Loud and clean, and a strong all rounder.
A pair covers a room of about 100 people. That's our Gold PA Speaker Package, from $176 per day, and it's the package we send out most. Office parties, launches, DJ playback and speeches, with no sub to lug.
QSC K10.2: best for smaller functions
One K10.2 covers a smaller room cleanly: speeches, a corporate lunch, background music for about 50 people. That's our Silver PA Speaker Package, from $87 per day. It's the simplest way to make sure the people at the back can hear the speeches.
QSC K8.2: best compact speaker and monitor
The K8.2 is the small one, at about 27 pounds, with a wide 105 degree coverage pattern. It has a tilt back corner, so it also works as a floor monitor for a band or a presenter. Good for a speech in a tight room, or as foldback beside bigger speakers.
QSC KS118: add it for real low end
For real low end, add subs. The KS118 is an 18 inch sub on a 3600 watt Class D amplifier, built for event production, clubs and performance venues. If it's dance floor duties, don't ask two top boxes to do everything. Real low end is the sub's job. Our Platinum PA Speaker Package pairs two K12.2 tops with two KS118 subs and an Allen & Heath ZED-10FX mixer, from $549 per day.
Bose S1 Pro+: best where there's no power
The Bose S1 Pro+ is our battery speaker. The Bose Battery Speaker Wireless Mic Package suits speech and runs up to about 8 hours on battery, from $165 per day. It's built for outdoor ceremonies and talks where there's no power to plug into. It is not the right call for a loud party. Our guide to battery powered speakers goes deeper.
What makes a powered speaker good for events?
A good event speaker stays clear and undistorted at volume, covers the room evenly, sets up fast, and takes the knocks of constant transport. Features matter less than whether it's the right size for the room.
That's why we stand by the QSC K.2 Series. Music, speeches, live performances: whatever you're amplifying, they keep it clear. Onboard DSP with QSC's Intrinsic Correction voicing keeps them balanced and clean. They work as a main PA or as stage monitors, and they're tough enough for constant transport and setup.
They're quick to set up too. Event setups can be chaotic, and we like to keep things as smooth as possible. Fewer adjustments and a faster setup mean we can focus on running the event rather than fiddling with gear.
How many powered speakers do you need?
It depends on the room and the crowd. As a starting point, one K10.2 suits about 50 people, a pair of K12.2s suits about 100, and anything with dancing needs subs.
Our sound system hire guide covers sizing in detail, from one speaker in a courtyard to a full PA with subs. For high stakes events, ask us about a tech. It is cheaper than a room full of feedback.
Should you hire or buy powered speakers?
Hire them for a one off event or the odd function. Buy only if you're running events every week and you know exactly what you need.
Hiring means you get the right size for each room, not the size you happened to buy. Our speaker hire in Melbourne covers every speaker on this list, with pickup from Footscray or delivery across Melbourne. If you're running DJ equipment, remember that DJ consoles are console only, so add a PA if it's the main sound system.
Questions we get asked
Are QSC speakers good for events?
Yes. The QSC K.2 Series is the core of our event and hire range. Each model runs a 2000 watt power module with onboard DSP, and they work as a main PA or as stage monitors.
What's the difference between powered and passive speakers?
A powered speaker has its own amplifier inside, so you plug it into power and a signal and it's ready. A passive speaker needs a separate amplifier. For events, powered speakers are faster to set up and easier to get right.
Do I need a subwoofer for my event?
For real low end, add subs. Speeches and background music are fine without one. DJ nights, bands and anything where people dance need a sub like the QSC KS118.
Can a battery speaker run a party?
Not a loud one. Our Bose battery package suits speech and runs up to about 8 hours on battery, but it is not the right call for a loud party. Book a PA package instead.
Do your speaker packages come with stands and cables?
Yes. Our speaker packages come with stands and the cables to run them. The Gold package also has a lead for a phone or laptop, and the Platinum package adds a mixer for more than one source.
