Drone Videography FAQ
DO YOU NEED A LICENSE TO FLY A DRONE?
Kind of, yes and no. If you're just flying for fun, you don’t need a license. But as soon as you start using your drone to make money—even if it's not direct cash, like promoting your business—you’ll need a license or authorisation from CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority).
There’s an exemption for drones under 2kg, so you can fly those commercially without a license. But there are still some hoops to jump through—you’ll need to register the drone, pass some basic tests, and follow flight restrictions, especially near airports or helipads. Also, without a license, you won’t be able to fly at night or in certain risky conditions, and you will struggle to get public liability insurance. So, if something goes wrong, you could be personally held liable.

IS CREATIVE KICKS LICENSED OR JUST CERTIFIED?
Yep, we are licensed. Not to be confused with just applying for a sub 2kg certification to fly which is a quick form. Our pilots studies and obtained a CASA RePL (Remote Pilots License) and Creative Kicks has a CASA ReOC (Remote Operator’s Certificate), which means we’ve passed all the tests, can fly in locations most other can't, have the right credentials, keep track of all our flight records, proper equipment maintenance and safety procedures.
Before hiring any drone operator, make sure they’re licensed and insured. If they’re not, you could be held responsible if anything goes wrong, if someone gets hurt or if property is damaged.

IS CREATIVE KICKS INSURED FOR DRONE OPERATION?
Absolutely. We’re covered with $20 million in public liability insurance.
IS IT CALLED A DRONE OR A UAV?
Both are correct. You'll see them both littered around the web. Drones are also referred to as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System), which is what CASA likes to call them. But we can just call them drones.
ARE THERE ANY LAWS OR RESTRICTIONS FOR DRONE OPERATORS?
Yep. There are a few... Part of the challenge is deciphering these conditions but we take care of that, so you don't have to. We stick to all the rules set by CASA, which include restrictions on where we can fly, how high we can fly and what areas or locations need special permission. We always insist on a site visit, full safety check and risk assessment prior to flying, and if the location isn’t safe, we'll modify how we fly to make sure it's safe and get it over the line for you.
WHAT ARE THE DRONE RULES AND REGULATIONS IN 2026?
The key rules include:
• Stay 30 meters away from people (15m for us with conditions on our license)
• Don’t fly over crowds or traffic.
• Stay below 400 feet (120 meters).
• No flying within 5 km of towered airports unless we've obtained permission or are using our micro drone.
• No flying after dark without approval.
• No flying in ways that could put manned aircraft at risk.
If it’s super windy or torrential rain, we won’t fly because most drones won't handle those conditions well and it'll show on your footage BUT we know taking a risk every now and then is sometimes where the best footage is captured, so we'll push it as long as it's still within the regulations, safe and doesn't pose any danger to other.

HOW MUCH DOES A DRONE VIDEOGRAPHER IN MELBOURNE COST?
Drone videographers usually fall into three buckets, and the cost mostly comes down to location, permits, and what you actually need delivered at the end.Simple shoots start around $1k ex GST. That is typically one location, minimal approvals, a short flight window, and straightforward stills or short video.
Mid range jobs usually sit between $1k and $5k ex GST. These tend to involve more planning, standard permits, a mix of stills, video or timelapslus some post production so the files are ready to hand over. Complex shoots usually land in the $5k to $10k + ex GST range. This is where you get into CBD sites, restricted airspace, OOH campaigns, multiple formats and cut downs, and heavier permit requirements. More moving parts, more lead time, more risk management.
Permit fees are charged at cost and sit on top of the shoot fee. If your scope changes, the price can shift too, but we can usually scale the approach up or down to match the job.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO OBTAIN A PERMIT?
Good question. It can be super confusing working out what's required. Luckily we've done this plenty of times. It all varies depending on the council, location and airspace. It can be anywhere from $100 for a permit from a suburban council to thousands for City of Melbourne and CASA permissions. If you're unsure, get in touch with Mike and we'll get the ball rolling to obtain a cost for you.
I FOUND THIS GUY ONLINE WHO OWNS A DRONE AND SAYS HE CAN DO MY SHOOT FOR $200.
That’s cool, just make sure they know what they're doing and are registered or licensed, so you don’t get in trouble if something goes wrong. Hobby drones are fine for fun and casual use or if you're doing smaller paid work, but for serious shoots you’ll want the precision and quality of professional operators and. equipment.
DO YOU DO WEDDINGS?
No, absolutely not.
